The Icebreaker Deck

Meeting new people is the whole point of a night out — and the first two minutes are the hardest part. Forty-eight conversation starters in three decks: warm-ups safe with anyone at the bar, questions for new lifestyle friends, and a flirtier deck for when it’s already going well. Nothing is stored, nothing is sent — the deck is shuffled fresh on your device every visit.

The interactive deck needs JavaScript, but here’s a hand to get you started:

  • What does a perfect Saturday look like when you’re not out somewhere like this?
  • What almost stopped you coming tonight?
  • What’s the biggest myth about this scene you believed before you ever walked in?
  • What do you wish someone had told you before your first night?
  • Who suggested tonight, and what was the pitch?
  • What’s the most attractive thing someone can do without saying a single word?
  • What’s the first thing you notice about someone across a room?
  • What are you hoping we all turn out to have in common?

How to actually break the ice

The questions are the easy part. What makes them work:

Open beats clever. Anything answerable with “yes”, “no” or “fine” dies on the spot. Every card in this deck is open on purpose — the goal is to hand the other person something they can run with, not to perform.

Listen twice as much as you deal. The follow-up question — the one that shows you actually heard the answer — does more than any opener ever will. The deck starts conversations; it can’t have them for you.

A short answer is an answer. If someone gives you two words and looks over your shoulder, that’s your answer, and the graceful move is a warm “enjoy your night” and an exit. Nobody owes anyone a conversation, at these venues more than anywhere. The same courtesy will be extended to you.

Start in the social space. Every Melbourne venue has a bar or lounge area that exists precisely for this. Conversation there carries zero implication — regulars will tell you the bar chat is half the reason they come.

Couples: deal to each other first. The Spark deck works surprisingly well on the drive there. Arriving mid-conversation beats arriving in silence, and you’ll both walk in warmer.

Send these to whoever you are going with.

They work better when you have both read them beforehand — and they are worth having on a phone that is not yours if yours is the one in your pocket.
