Choosing between them

Both are worth your time, and most people in the scene use both. The short version:

Between Friends is the more casual, conversational room — a bar first, with a theme on top. Easier to reach by public transport, more flexible about walk-ins, and stronger if you want a night built around talking to people.

Pineapples is the more produced night — a performance or DJ set to anchor the room, purpose-built facilities including private rooms and a change room, and the most structured process in Melbourne for a nervous first visit.

If you’re deciding where to start, read the first-timer’s guide and pick whichever venue has a newcomer event on a night that suits you. Both run them deliberately.
