Most “best swingers clubs in Melbourne” lists are wrong — not because they rank badly, but because they’re listing the wrong kind of venue entirely. Here’s what’s actually in the city, what each one is genuinely best at, and how we decided.
First, the problem with every other list
Search for the best swingers clubs in Melbourne and you’ll get results mixing three completely different kinds of business together: lifestyle venues, adult entertainment venues like strip clubs, and licensed brothels.
These are not variations on a theme. A lifestyle venue is a private, ticketed space where couples and singles socialise and, if they choose, play with each other. An adult entertainment venue is a business where you pay to watch or receive a service from staff. The social contract, the etiquette and the entire point are different — and turning up at one expecting the other is a genuinely bad night.
The test: at a lifestyle venue, everyone in the room is a guest who bought a ticket. If anyone is being paid to be there in a non-staff capacity, it isn’t a lifestyle venue. If a list you’re reading doesn’t observe that distinction, it wasn’t written by anyone who goes.
How we judged
We don’t publish star ratings, because a number we invented wouldn’t mean anything and there’s no honest way to score a venue we can’t audit. Instead we give “best for” awards against stated criteria, and every judgement below traces back to something the venue publishes itself:
- Is it actually a lifestyle venue? The threshold question above.
- Is the entry policy published and clear? Can you tell, before paying, whether the night is open to you?
- Is there provision for newcomers? Dedicated beginner events, an introduction process, or published guidance.
- Is there a published consent policy? And is it enforced by staff?
- Facilities. Change rooms, lockers, showers, private versus open space.
- Price transparency. Can you find out what it costs without buying?
- Access. Can you get there without driving?

Best for your first time — Pineapples Lifestyle Bar
South Melbourne. Of the venues we cover, the one most deliberately built for people who’ve never done this.
Pineapples runs Taste: A Night for Newbies, described on their own site as a relaxed introductory event for people who have never been to a lifestyle bar or are still finding their feet. Add an introduction system for new guests, a published code of conduct, a dedicated Your First Visit page, and a purpose-built layout that puts a reception and social bar between the front door and anything else — and it is the softest introduction of the venues we cover.
The practical detail that matters most for a nervous first-timer: there’s a change room, lockers and showers, so you arrive in normal clothes and leave in normal clothes.
Best for a relaxed, conversational night — Between Friends
Balaclava. Of the three, the one that reads least like an event and most like a good local bar.
Between Friends trades as a wine bar and the framing is honest — there’s a bar list, seating and a crowd that talks. The weekly themed calendar gives everyone an easy opener, and of the three it publishes the most flexible arrival options: you can pre-book, text your name to hold a place and pay on arrival, or walk up before the 11:00pm cut-off.
It’s also the easiest of the three to reach without a car, sitting near Balaclava station on the Chapel Street corridor — which matters more than people expect on a night where you may want a drink.
Best for a big, produced night — Virtue & Vice
Roaming venues. If you want performance, dancefloor and spectacle rather than a bar, this is the closest of the three.
Virtue & Vice runs erotic parties at hired spaces — a main dancefloor, a BDSM area, play spaces throughout and a stage performer line-up. It’s an event, produced as one, and it feels different to a permanent venue.
Two caveats. The dress code is genuinely strict — erotic and revealing dress is a condition of entry, and club attire is explicitly refused. And because they run at different spaces, everything about the night travels with the event rather than the brand.
Best for queer and non-binary guests — Virtue & Vice
The clearest of the venues we cover. They state they welcome people of all gender identities, sexualities and backgrounds, describe their events as LGBTQ+ friendly, and state they don’t discriminate on age, size, race, looks or sexual preference. The Boudoir is stated as open to female-identifying and non-binary guests and couples.
Melbourne’s lifestyle bars are welcoming, but their published audience definitions are largely framed around male/female couples. If that framing doesn’t fit you, start here.
Consent policies: who publishes what
We’re not giving an award here, and we want to be explicit about why. Judging whose consent culture is better would mean auditing what actually happens on the floor of each venue — which we cannot do and won’t pretend to. What we can report is what each operator publishes.
All three venues we cover publish conduct rules and state that breaches result in removal. The difference is in how much is written down. Virtue & Vice publishes the most detailed written policy of the three and is the only one describing staff dedicated to it — a team they call consent angels, roaming each event. Their stated rules include no contact without express consent from both parties, that the absence of a “no” does not mean “yes”, not interrupting others during play, stopping immediately when asked, and removal without refund for breaches. Pineapples publishes a dedicated code of conduct page and describes itself as a consent-focused space. Between Friends publishes entry conditions, guidance on what to expect, and a dedicated page for single men.
That is a difference in what is published, not a judgement about what any given night is actually like. Read each venue’s policy yourself before booking — it’s the most useful five minutes you can spend.
Best facilities — Pineapples Lifestyle Bar
Purpose-built shows. Reception, change room, bar and seated areas at the front; a mix of open spaces and private lockable rooms further in; lockers, showers and refresh stations throughout; a VIP area, with whole-venue hire available.
Best for single women — a genuine tie
Single women have the widest access of anyone in the Melbourne scene, and both lifestyle bars welcome them across their regular calendars. Between Friends explicitly includes single ladies in its standard audience; Pineapples runs solos events alongside its general programme.
Pick on the night you want rather than on access: Between Friends for conversation, Pineapples for a produced night.
Best options for single men — the honest answer
There is no venue in Melbourne that is straightforwardly “best for single men”, and any list telling you otherwise is selling something. Access is restricted almost everywhere. What exists:
- Pineapples — Solos Night. Built for people attending alone, with open-play couples also welcome. The most reliable route in.
- Between Friends — nominated events. Single men are admitted only at events that say so, and the venue names those events accordingly. If the title doesn’t say it, the night isn’t open to you.
- Virtue & Vice — check first. Their published material is inconsistent on single men: one page states a limited number are welcome, while their FAQ states an event is not open to single males. Contact them about the specific event before buying.
Also in Melbourne
- Wet On Wellington, Collingwood — a sauna and pool venue whose calendar is mostly LGBTQ+ men’s events, but which runs a recurring Swingers Couples Pool Party. A different proposition, and the only pool party on this list. Their site →
- Melbourne Swingers (Shed 16), Seaford — reported in press coverage as a purpose-built venue with sauna, spa and steam facilities, weekly events and a monthly newcomers session. Their site blocks automated access, so we have not verified current details ourselves. Treat as reported, not confirmed.
- Private parties — a substantial layer of the scene runs on invitation through established groups, and doesn’t advertise. We don’t list them, because they aren’t ours to list.
